Annual Report 2014...

What has LIFE-FORCE been up to during 2014?

As the LIFE-FORCE Counselling Service approached the end of 2014, there were 24 Team Counsellors working on the premises, plus 11 Student Counsellors on Placement. During this year we said goodbye to Carole Heddle, Wendy Lockhert, Christina Court and Kath Moore wishing them well in pastures new, and said a very warm welcome to Elizabeth Scott, Rosie Smith and Kate Swallow. In the office we welcomed our new Clerical Administrator Carole Vickers. During 2014 BACP launched a new voluntary Register for Counselling and Psychotherapy which is approved by the Professional Standards Authority and we are pleased to confirm that all our team members are now listed on this professional register.

During the Spring, all Team Counsellors attended an annual meeting during which interesting recently attended CPD courses were shared between members. The focus of the Centre policy updates was a presentation on the importance of the initial assessment and the requirement for counsellors to complete a Therapy Assessment Form for all new client referrals.

Due to our long opening hours we are happy to say that last year LIFE-FORCE did not have many clients who were kept waiting longer than a few days to see a counsellor, but those clients who did have to wait a little longer were seeing one of our mature trainees on placement at LIFE-FORCE which has become a very popular service due to its low cost. As well as being open every weekday morning our office continued to be staffed four afternoons each week, so that we were able to take new client referrals and answer queries in person rather than clients having to leave messages on the confidential answer-phone.

Throughout the year LIFE-FORCE continued to work closely with other statutory and voluntary organisations, such as Beacon House Ministries, a local government organisation and some local GP practices in the area, who are pleased to be able to refer clients to us for counselling and to whom we can refer clients to for specialist help if required.

In January, May and September LIFE-FORCE held three successful Open Days for potential counselling students. Our Counselling School remains popular with students from all walks of life. Not only does LIFE-FORCE provide students with an onsite library and IT room, students also have access to all of their essential forms and course handouts from a secure area on the LIFE-FORCE website.

Martin Chester of Therapeutic Creative Solutions ran his Supervision Training Course for professional qualified counsellors again this year which proved to be very popular. LIFE-FORCE continued to support our team counsellors by hosting an ongoing professional CPD group throughout the year, facilitated by Pam Miller. We also hosted an HSE Approved Emergency First Aid at Work course taught by Tony Johnson, which we run every year, along with several courses ran by individual practitioners including Mindfulness and Steiner Study Group. Ari Badaines Ph.D returned to facilitate the annual CPD weekend Gestalt training course at the Centre.

One of this years summer building maintenance projects involved the redecoration of the Georgian windows in the Emerald and Coral rooms and the replacement of the secondary double glazing units which are now a lot easier to maintain and open, which makes airing and ventilating the rooms easier for all therapists.

We are very pleased to announce that LIFE-FORCE celebrated its 20th Anniversary on Tuesday 16th September 2014. We received lots of kind cards, gifts and congratulatory messages on the day which were much appreciated.

On Thursday 23rd October our Marketing Administrator, Karen Waddy and two of our Team Counsellors, Christine Harrison and Melanie Skeet, ran an information stand at a Cancer Research Fundraising Event named The Pink Party put on by Ellisons Solicitors at Wivenhoe House, Colchester. They handed out leaflets and discussed the Counselling Service as well as the Counselling School with many of the invited guests. Ellisons thanked LIFE-FORCE after the event for our participation, and for helping them to raise £600 for Cancer Research. We hope to be able to attend their next Pink Party in 2015.

LIFE-FORCE are proud to announce we achieved BACP Endorsement for our Working With Couples Course , which will be run by Paula Isgrove and Ian Rattray during February and March 2015.

We continued to seek out new advertising options and were actively involved with highlighting our online presence through our regularly updated website and multiple regularly updated online advertisements for our services. We continued to embrace online social networking and created a Blogger account which has had 340 views so far. Our Youtube video has had almost 900 views to date and our Facebook Business page remains popular, with almost 150 likes. We have 335 Twitter followers and our Wordpress blog has had 1,150 views, with nearly 50 followers.

Ellisons were in the Pink this October!

27 October 2014
Ellisons Solicitors held their annual Pink Party on Thursday 23rd October, to not only highlight some of the legal issues affecting women, but to also help raise money for Breast Cancer!
The event was held at the beautiful Wivenhoe House and was open to female clients, friends and staff of the firm.
Guests were welcomed to the event and taken straight to the beautiful function room in the newer part of the building. Here, the guests were treated to an array of stall holders. These included Pause for Torte (cupcakes by Emma Berry), Puzzle Styling, PO:SH Handbags; Image and Style Consultant, Thomasin Newton; Colne Contemporary Therapies; Colchester Institute Beauty, Badu’s Indian Feast; Scentsy and Artwork by Emma Closs.
What’s more, Ellisons were delighted to welcome a new element to the event by organising counsellors from Lifeforce (based on East Hill); and Amanda Green a gynaecological nurse from the Colchester Hospital to attend. They were on hand to raise awareness of various health issues.
All stall holders gave up their time for free and each donated raffle prizes or 10% of their takings to the charity.
Jayne Scott, Partner at Ellisons Solicitors, said: ‘‘Breast Cancer is unfortunately a disease that affects so many and so we wanted to put on an event that would bring women together, enable them to relax with friends for the evening and raise money for the charity. It was once again a great success and we look forward to next year!’’
The evening raised £600 for Breast Cancer.

Waiting List...

Here at LIFE-FORCE we currently have no waiting list, so the majority of clients have their first appointment with a counsellor within a week of contacting us. Obviously this can take a little longer if the client has limited availability or during the summer months when some counsellors are on annual leave. However, we always aim to get a client their first session as soon as physically possible.

NHS waiting lists can be up to 16 weeks, which is a very long time, especially when you want help NOW!

We can take referrals from any local GP Surgery, which can help reduce costs to GP practices and cut down the waiting list for NHS counselling services. We can provide GPs and GP Surgery Practice Managers with leaflets and posters if they would like to take advantage of the Counselling Service that LIFE-FORCE can offer.

Clients do not need to see their GP if they don’t want to, they can simply ring up LIFE-FORCE and self-refer. Our office staff are on hand weekdays to take all of your details and to answer any of your questions.

Please contact us for further information.

If we are not in the office, please leave a message on our confidential answerphone with your contact details, letting us know what is the best time to ring you, and we will return your call as soon as we can.

Our YouTube Video...

This 30 second video has narration, so you’ll need to turn on your speakers

or plug in your headphones.

LIFE-FORCE Counselling Service in Colchester offers counselling for a wide variety of issues, including anger management, bereavement, stress, domestic violence, abuse and much more…

Counselling is a process which involves skills of caring and listening and prompting. A counsellor will be supportive but give little or no direct advice, since the aim is to help the individual to develop insights into their own problems.

Through talking and sharing a person is helped to explore their thoughts, possibly difficult or painful feelings and related behaviours and thereby reach a clearer self understanding. During this exploration the person is helped to find and use their inner resources and strengths so that they can cope more effectively with life by making appropriate decisions and taking relevant action.

Longer term counselling tends to deal with more deep-seated personal issues which may bring about really profound changes and the healing of old hurts. In the process of therapy the person is encouraged to look closely at their past, their childhood and their relationships with their parents and other important people. This exploration helps increase awareness and understanding of current patterns and negative habits that may have become unconscious, daily habits and so lead to possible change and self-growth.

Treats For Troops...

This article appeared in the Colchester Evening Gazette on 9th September 2010.
The management at Life Force agreed that we should join in with the newspaper’s campaign to offer “treats” for Colchester-based troops while they were back home on leave for two weeks during November 2010.

Business Service...

The LIFE-FORCE Business Service:

A happy workforce is likely to be more productive than an unhappy workforce.

Employees who are preoccupied with external issues, such as domestic disputes, bereavement or low self-esteem are unlikely to be able to give work their undivided attention, and are more likely to take sick days in order to address their personal problems, leaving you short-staffed.

Counselling can offer a positive and cost effective way to help members of staff to resolve many private conflicts, allowing the individuals to be more focussed and successful employees, potentially helping to create a more profitable business.

The LIFE-FORCE Business Service is provided FREE OF CHARGE to the employer.

We provide you with all the literature you need to enable your Human Resources or Personnel department to refer your employees to us for their counselling requirements, at a cost that your staff can easily afford to pay. We also offer a wide range of appointment times to fit in around the working week.

Also, at LIFE-FORCE we fully understand that occasionally, for various reasons, there is the need to reduce the workforce. We can offer low cost redundancy counselling to any employees facing this difficult situation.

For more information regarding LIFE-FORCE counselling services for businesses, please phone 01206 791661 or Email LIFE-FORCE to request a Business Information Pack.

The Centre has 2 training/group rooms The Rainbow Room and The Coral Room.

The Rainbow Room

The Rainbow Room has undergone major renovation which involved opening up the space by restoring & using the original beams. It is a light space due to large period windows at either end of the room and is easily accessible being on the ground floor. It is equipped with a white Nobo board, comfortable chairs, OHP, TV, DVD Player. There are also tea & coffee facilities at one end of the room. The room is suitable for training courses, meeting and groups, has a capacity for 12/18 people and is mostly available week days during the day, and also some evening and weekends.

It has an attractive blue and yellow colour scheme, with white gloss kitchen units, a large handmade beech table and is also equipped with a fridge, cooker and microwave. It is a bright welcoming place which is open to all those who visit and use the centre facilities. Tea, coffee and herb teas are available and it is a space that can sometimes be of quiet contemplation and at other times more interactive and sociable. Counselling Course...

LIFE-FORCE is proud to be the FIRST course to meet the new BACP Gold Book Standards.

BACP writes,“Please accept our congratulations on being the first course to successfully meet and demonstrate the Gold Book requirements. Also, our sincere thanks for all the hard work LIFE-FORCE has put into maintaining and developing the accreditation status of the course.”

The Assessor “… commends the course for its reflective and diligent work in reviewing its processes in line with current developments in the profession. She further congratulates LIFE-FORCE School of Counselling on being the first course to be ready to meet the high standard of professional excellence represented by Gold Book accreditation as it becomes operative in 2014.”

The Integrative Approach

The core model of this course is integrative and the foundation of the course’s philosophy is a theoretical integration of humanistic and existential ideas, theories and approaches. The course also draws on aspects of psychodynamic thought so as to enrich the understanding of both human development generally and the dynamics of the therapeutic relationship. The holistic approach of the course emphasises the need for the integration of thinking, feeling and behaviour together with awareness of the social and cultural contexts of counselling.

An emphasis on the therapeutic relationship and empowerment of the client are seen as core to the process of therapeutic change at all times and we encourage our students to develop their own style of counselling within the core integrative model being offered.

The Course Structure

The course programme is run over a 3 year period plus a short introductory course. The four areas of the learning and assessment include theory, professional practice, skills and self-development and these are the foundation of the programme and are therefore developed throughout the three year training.

The course is presented as modules, details of which can be found in the course prospectus.

Course Certification

Stage 3
Certificate in Counselling Skills

 Course Progression

Stage 2 Introduction to Counselling is a taster course designed to provide students with a sample experience of counselling training, as well as our style of teaching, to see if this is a journey they would like to take at LIFE-FORCE. During this course students are introduced to Egan’s 3 – Stage Model of Counselling along with basic listening skills, before applying to proceed onto the Stage 3 course. The School runs three Stage 2 courses per year all feeding into the Stage 3 course commencing in January each year.

Stage 3 Counselling Skills Certificate is the first year of the programme during which the students study the humanistic approach from both a theory and skills perspective, along with an emphasis on personal growth and self-development. Students are also required to complete 12 hours of personal therapy during this training year.

Stage 4 Diploma in Integrative Counselling is the second & third year of training during which students go on to explore and integrate other existential models, and by developing an increasing understanding of a range of other theoretical approaches theories and therapeutic practice, they are led towards developing their own integrated approach wherein humanistic interventions are progressively informed by a growing understanding of counselling theory and the process of counselling itself.

Students are expected to commence a clinical placement by the end of the first term of the Diploma Course, and in addition are required to undertake personal therapy alongside their counselling client work.

Throughout the course therefore the student will experience the process of counselling, both as a counsellor and as a client and during Stage 4, having undertaken an extensive practical placement working with clients, the student can become a fully qualified counsellor by attaining a Diploma in Integrative Counselling.

Course Validation and Completion.
